Frequently Asked Questions

We're building up a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and this will keep growing, so keep checking!

Do all ContentSpot sites have to look the same?

No, they don't. We will be offering a range of menuing systems, both horizontal and vertical, using either text or graphics. Also, every element of the design is done utilising CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which enables us to "skin" your site quickly, and in many different ways. If you have an existing design, we will be happy to fit it into a ContentSpot system.

Can I host a ContentSpot site on another ISP's server?

ContentSpot is an all-in-one solution for web sites, and has to be hosted on our servers. The application is written in a mix of ColdFusion, MySQL, mod_perl and ImageMagick, and it's rare that you would find a shared server with the correct versions of all these products, and the necessary access to configure it all.

How secure is my data?

We back up your data, both styling and database, every day. And we will soon be offering the ability for you to take a copy of your MySQL data from the database via the Administration System. Nobody except us at Horus has access to either ColdFusion or MySQL at root level.

What happens if I want to move my site somewhere else?

If you want to leave us for any reason, we will happily give you a copy of your MySQL data, your CSS, any images which you have uploaded, and your web logs. However, we won't give you a copy of the code that runs the server - that is our copyright, and is not available.

Are there any restrictions on what I can put on my Contentspot site?

Please don't upload anything that could get any of us into trouble. That includes, but is not exclusive to, pornography, libellous statements, other people's copyright material (particularly MP3s), huge streaming audio or video files without checking with us first, or anything that might bring the Police, Security Services, etc down on us. And please be aware that if any branch of officialdom comes calling, we will take the information down and ask questions afterwards - we aren't big enough or rich enough to argue with The Powers That Be!

Do I have to have my own domain name?

We'd always advise it, to be honest. But if you don't want to get your own www address, we're happy to give you a subdomain, so you could be whoeveryouare.contentspot.com if you like.

Just who are these ContentSpot people anyway?

ContentSpot is written by horus web engineering ltd. We've written big, complex Content Management systems for the likes of Private Eye and Babcock plc. But we felt sure that there were a lot of people out there who wanted a single solution, hosting and code, to allow them to run a database driven site. And so we wrote one!

This web application isn't going to suit everyone. But we think it will suit a lot of people. Why not give it a try?

Will my site be search engine friendly?

Well, given that fact that you are in control of the content, it's really up to you! But we always advise that what goes on the front page of your site is WYAAWYD (who you are and what you do) - this is a mantra we repeat endlessly to our clients.

Apart from key words in your text, links into your site help - and as soon as it is live, we will link to your site from ours, which should kick start the search engine spiders. We also give you search engine friendly URLs - look at the URLs on this site - which clearly show which page you're on (and those names are under your control via the Administration System).
